Gait Analysis

Gait analysis and treatments

Your gait is the particular way your feet move in motion. Running and walking are the main types of gaits, which also include marching, jogging, hobbling, limping and more. Contact Kettering Foot Health Clinic to get your gait analysed.
Facts about feet

What is gait analysis?

It is basically a study of how you walk. Biomechanics is an assessment of the structure, alignment, strengths and weaknesses of the feet and legs. We thoroughly analyse the condition of your feet and suggest treatments for any problem that we may find. Below are some conditions that we've come across in our patients. We also produce comfortable custom-made prescription orthotics and toe devices to help prevent the development of painful corns and calluses. If you have any queries, take a look at the FAQs or contact our team for help.
Supination

Supination

This is excessive outward rolling motion of the foot and ankle during a walking or running stride. It’s common in those with flat feet and can lead to foot aches and pain such as Iliotibial Band Syndrome, plantar fasciitis, shin splints and knee pain.
Over-pronation

Over-pronation

This is an inward rolling motion the foot makes during a normal walking or running stride. The foot (and ankle) rolls inward and the arches flatten. This is common in those with flat feet and can lead to foot aches and pain such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee pain and back pain.
Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia

Known as ‘stone bruise’, this is a painful inflammation of the ball of the foot. Common in men and women who are on their feet a lot due to work. A callus often develops in the centre and can cause a burning sensation. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Bunions

Bunions

These are a bump on the side of the foot behind the big toe. It can be red, swollen and painful. Caused by tight shoes rubbing the joint by over-pronation when walking. Shoes often exacerbate the condition. Surgery for this condition should be the last resort. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Morton's neuroma

Morton’s neuroma

A fibrous tissue formation around nerve tissue in the ball of the foot. It can feel like a pebble in the shoe or walking on razor blades. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Fallen arches

Fallen arches

Also called flat feet when the arches collapse leading to over-pronation. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Heel pain

Heel pain

The most common cause is plantar pasciitis, known as Policeman’s Foot. Caused by over-pronation. As the foot pronates, the arch collapses and the muscles and tendons are forced to stretch and elongate. This puts stretch and strain on the Plantar Fascia running from the heel to the toes which then becomes inflamed. It begins as a dull, intermittent heel pain or arch pain. It can develop into a sharp persistent pain, especially the first thing in the morning, lessening with walking. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Heel spurs

Heel spurs

Normally associated with plantar fasciitis and causing the same type of pain, it is a calcified hook under the heel bone. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
Shin splints

Shin splints

This is a common complaint with runners and dancers. These are sore shins or Medial Tibial Shin Syndrome. The pain indicates an underlying problem such as irritated swollen muscle, hairline stress fractures, over-pronation or flat feet. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
knee pain

Knee pain

Knee pain is caused by over-pronation. The lower leg internally rotates, putting force on the kneecap and weakening the muscle structures, causing knee pain. This condition can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics.
back pain

Back pain

As the feet over-pronate, the legs internally rotate and the pelvis is forced to tilt forward, resulting in increased curvature of the lower back. This causes tightness and stiffness of the lower back muscles which can successfully be treated with custom-made orthotics by helping align the body posture.
Having suffered (though not in silence!) with two sore feet, I came to see Helen who claimed to 'love a challenge'! Well, she met the challenge and emerged victorious, allowing me to walk from the surgery with comfortable feet for the first time in weeks. I tottered into her surgery and danced out. You can confidently put your feet into her hands. Thanks, Helen!
